Frequently Asked Questions About Insurance
The Boley Insurance Team has answered thousands of questions over the years. Here are our most frequently asked questions, and of course, the answers.
Why do my rates keep going up?
We understand that it’s frustrating that rates are increasing. There are a number of factors causing this.
- Increased car repair expenses for parts and labor.
- Higher replacement costs
- Economic factors such as inflation and changes in interest rates.
Also, increases in the number of claims and claim severity in our area affect premiums. For individuals, factors like vehicle, age, prior claims, driving history, and credit score can impact your rate.
What are the minimum requirements for auto insurance in Florida?
Florida law requires that all drivers carry 10/20/10 coverage limits. This stands for: bodily injury per individual / bodily injury per accident / property damage.
The first 10 means $10,000 for the medical bills of someone you injure in an accident.
The 20 stands for $20,000 total to be paid in bodily injury liability per accident.
The last 10 stands for up to $10,000 for any cars or property you may damage.
PIP is Personal Injury Protection. Florida drivers are required to cover a minimum of $10,000 in PIP. Florida auto owners are also required to carry a minimum of $10,000 in property damage and cover the driver and all passengers.
Carrying this minimum does satisfy your legal obligation, but please note that this minimal coverage is often not enough. Paying for higher coverage offers better protection.
Do I really need Bodily Injury if it’s not required by Florida law?
Yes! You definitely should include Bodily Injury Liability Insurance (BI) if you drive in Florida, even though it isn’t required by law. If you cause an accident and someone else is injured, you can be sued for their damages. Purchasing BI helps protect your assets and provides an attorney in case you are at fault and get sued.
What is Uninsured Motorist coverage, and do I need it?
Uninsured Motorist coverage (UM) helps to pay for your bodily injury if you are hit by a driver who doesn’t have any insurance or not enough. We recommend carrying UM in case you are involved in an accident with a driver who is uninsured or underinsured.
Can I still get insurance if I have a poor driving record or bad credit?
In most cases, yes. But it does depend on the severity of the situation. We write policies every day for customers with tickets, accidents, DUIs, and low credit, but occasionally there are instances that we cannot. We can run a quick quote for you to check for free.
Does my homeowners policy include flood?
Most policies do not include flood insurance unless it is specifically endorsed. We sell separate flood policies for your home.
What is umbrella insurance?
Umbrella insurance is a type of liability insurance that provides additional coverage over and above the limits of your primary home and auto policy. It’s an extra layer of protection to help shield you in the event of a lawsuit.
Umbrella is particularly valuable for individuals with significant assets to protect. It is also highly recommended for people who have higher risks of liability, such as owning rental properties.
What happens if I have a lapse in coverage?
A lapse in coverage can make it harder for you to get insurance in the future and result in higher premiums, so try not to let your policy lapse. A lapse may also result in the suspension of your registration or driver's license. Call our office ASAP if you suspect you may have lapsed so we can help.

How can I save money on my insurance?
